We designed the Sail Learn to Earn program in 2009 for the traveller to Australia taking up the Working Holiday Maker Visa or Australians looking to commence a career in Marine Tourism.

Price: 23 Day program $3319-3349 (basic) to $3819-3849 (Advanced Program includes International Crew Certification).  

SCHEDULE: Starts Every 2nd Monday, departing Abell Point Marina at 9:00am

Week 1: Training on our 5 day 5 night Crew Course, where you will live-aboard our Sail Training Vessel, undergoing theory and practical application, while sailing around the Whitsunday Islands.

Includes: all Meals for 5 days 5 nights, Course Notes, Tuition, Snorkelling Instruction and Equipment, Marine and National Park Fees, Sea Time Log and Course Certificate.


Week 2: Consolidation on the Sail Training Vessel reinforcing the learning from week 1. Guests on the advanced program also undertake the VHF Radio Operators Course and Speed Boat Licence.

Week 3: 6 Nights on sailing tours, made up of 3 x 2 day 2 night Maxi Sailing Tours around the Whitsundays as an extra crew member aboard our charter yachts.  Guests will be rostered on the yachts and get to work with Professional Crews, reinforcing the theory from the Crew Course, plus learning other customer service aspects of working on Charter Yachts.  

Includes: Meals while on the sailing tours (12 days) and 2 Crew Uniforms, plus - Backpackers Dorm/Share based Accommodation in Airlie Beach to be used for nights off roster. ie, in between rostered 2d 2n maxi sailing tours at sea.


Please Note: Work on the Commercial Charter Yachts is pretty hard, provisioning the yacht, assisting guests, assisting with cleaning, working the decks, assisting the cook.  However, if you are energetic and don't mind mucking in, you will enjoy it.  Also note guests should arrive into Airlie Beach on the Sunday the day before the sail training program around the Whitsundays commences. Accommodation is NOT included on this night, so you should pre-arrange this. Please note, the team at Explore Whitsundays can assist as required with accommodation bookings and transfer information. 

At end of the 23 Day Program: If vacancies exist, an interview will be arranged with our Human Resource / Recruitment Manager to evaluate performance with a view to employment.  Employment is not guaranteed and is based on positions being available and participants performanceSuccessful job applicants will be required to complete a company induction and a further days training to get a Queensland Boat Licence.   (This is required to drive the tender from the yacht to shore guest transfers). Note: Employment opportunities provided by Southern Cross Sailing Adventures, Prosail Whitsundays, Australian Tall Ship Cruises, Whitsunday Bullet, Atlantic Clipper.

For international travellers, it is necessary to obtain a Working Holiday Visa before leaving home.

To work in Australia, a valid Australian Tax File Number is necessary. We suggest this is arranged before leaving home.
